The Mentone RSL Sub-Branch has proudly served the community since its foundation in 1943. Born out of a desire to create a dedicated space for veterans and their families in Melbourne’s bayside area, our Sub-Branch was officially formed on January 7th, 1943, during the height of World War II. Many of our founding members were returned servicemen from World War I, who had previously been associated with the Mordialloc RSL. Recognising the need for a more locally focused organisation, these individuals established the Mentone Sub-Branch to honour the fallen and support one another through fellowship and service.

Our early years were shaped by a strong sense of purpose and commitment to remembrance. In July 1943, with support from the community and the Mordialloc Council, we submitted plans to erect a memorial hall in the parkland off Mentone Parade, behind the war memorial gates. This location was selected for its symbolism and accessibility, ensuring it could become a focal point for community commemorations and veteran activities. The proposed building was designed to serve multiple purposes—housing a billiard room, library, concert room, and meeting spaces to support the wellbeing and camaraderie of our members.

As our membership grew and the need for a more permanent facility became evident, we acquired "Riviera," a grand Victorian-era villa located at 9 Palermo Street, Mentone. Built in 1888 for Charles Potts, a prominent Melbourne businessman, Riviera provided a fitting home for our Sub-Branch. In 1952, it officially became our headquarters. Over the years, we have preserved this historic building with great care while adapting its interior to meet the evolving needs of our members and the broader community. Modern facilities have been added to the rear, ensuring Riviera remains functional and welcoming while maintaining its architectural integrity and historical charm.

Throughout our history, the Mentone RSL has remained steadfast in our mission: to support veterans and their families, to honour those who served and sacrificed, and to foster a spirit of community. We are deeply committed to commemorative events that mark our national moments of reflection, including ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. These occasions continue to draw large crowds from Mentone and surrounding suburbs, reflecting the enduring respect held for those who have served our country.

The Mentone RSL is more than a historical organisation—we are a living, breathing part of the community. We offer welfare support, social activities, and a welcoming space for veterans of all generations. Our facilities are used by local groups, and our clubrooms are a place of friendship and shared experience.

As we look to the future, we remain guided by the principles of service, respect, and remembrance. We are proud of our heritage, honoured to serve those who have served, and committed to ensuring the legacy of Australia's servicemen and women lives on through the generations.
